READY FOR 2027

The land-sector rules for Scope 3 are changing. Is your supply chain ready?

The GHG Protocol's Land Sector and Removals Standard brings land use change, soil carbon and removals into corporate inventories. Whether you're just getting started or already well along, in 30 minutes we'll show you where you stand and which gaps matter most.

Why it matters

1

New categories, reported separately.

Land use change, land management CO2, production emissions and biogenic emissions each need accounting, separately from non-land emissions.

2

Traceability sets your boundary.

How far you can trace sourcing, from country to region to field, determines how accurate your Scope 3 can be. Book-and-claim does not conform.

3

Removals and credits need a clean split.

The same removal can't count in your inventory and in a retired credit. Grower carbon programs running alongside inventory reporting carry the most exposure.

More than a reporting obligation

Done well, LSRS reporting shows where your land-sector emissions actually sit, gives credit for the reductions and removals your growers are already delivering, puts your FLAG target on data that holds up, and supports the claims customers, investors and lenders increasingly ask for. The same data that makes you compliant helps you decide where to source and where to invest.

What we do

We help agrifood companies turn the new land-sector rules into credible, reportable numbers.

Viresco works only in agriculture and land-based value chains, so we start from your commodities, sourcing regions and grower programs. We don't recalculate your inventory: we work with the one you or your platform already produce, and focus on what LSRS adds.

How it works

  1. 1

    Free 30-minute consultation.

We run the six-question Quick Screen with you live, confirm what's already covered and give you a results snapshot: Not Ready, Building, Advancing or Audit-Ready.

  2. 2

    Full LSRS Readiness Diagnostic.

All 10 LSRS dimensions scored, with a written report, phased roadmap and 45-minute readout, in 5 to 7 business days.

  3. 3

    Build on it.

Your results can become the baseline for your 2027 program. In a follow-on engagement, we place your program on our Programme Maturity Framework, carry open risks into a risk matrix your team can manage, and use your priorities in our portfolio tool to plan sourcing and grower-program work, through Viresco's End-to-End Carbon Roadmapping method.

The Diagnostic is an indicative readiness assessment. It is not a conformance audit, assurance engagement or legal advice.

Prairie value-chain carbon program

A crop-input company and a national protein processor

Challenge
Two companies at opposite ends of the value chain wanted verified emission reductions from Prairie farms that both could credibly use.
Approach
Viresco led discovery, program design and implementation of a farm-level carbon program, starting in the 2021 growing season, with independent validation and verification.
Outcome
A working upstream and downstream program producing verified reductions in the form of insetting units.

Early read on the GHG Protocol land-sector guidance

A global food and beverage brand

Challenge
The brand needed to know how the draft land-sector guidance (the forerunner of LSRS) would change its inventory and its farm-level intervention projects.
Approach
An assessment covering inventory impacts, integrating project accounting into inventory accounting, and the treatment of sequestration, permanence, additionality, rotational and landscape accounting.
Outcome
Recommendations on adapting inventory accounting and pilot projects ahead of the final standard.

Frequently asked questions

Does LSRS apply to us?

If you own or control land, buy or sell agricultural products, or have land-based activities in your value chain, almost certainly. The free consultation will help you confirm which parts apply, using your own inventory data.

When does it take effect?

January 1, 2027.

Do we have to report removals?

No. Removals are optional, but if you report them they must meet the standard's safeguards on traceability, permanence and double counting.

How does this relate to SBTi FLAG?

SBTi is revising its FLAG standard to align with LSRS. FLAG target-setting applies when land-sector emissions are about 20% or more of your Scope 1 to 3 total.

What does the Diagnostic cost?

It's a fixed fee based on your company's size and sourcing footprint. We'll scope it with you in the free consultation.

What happens in the free consultation?

Thirty minutes, four parts: context, the standard, a six-question Quick Screen and a next step. There's no obligation.

Do you calculate our inventory?

No. We work with the inventory you or your platform already produce, and focus on what LSRS adds: traceability, removals, claims and double counting.

Do you provide traceability or custody evidence?

No. We review the evidence you collect, or receive from your traceability provider, against LSRS: whether the custody model conforms, whether it covers your main commodities, and whether it will stand up at assurance.

We've already done a lot of the work. Is this still useful?

Yes. The consultation is built as a final check: we confirm what's covered and flag anything still open before January 1.

Most teams we speak to have done the groundwork. The last question is whether anything has been missed. Thirty minutes answers it.
